From Theo Gibb

Most of the techniques for making and repairing the various parts are reasonably obvious and I have worked out a lot by observing how things are put together. The one area where I am unable to understand the actual techniques used are in tuning, especially the final fine tuning. I can see where the metal has to be removed to raise or lower pitch by looking at the marks on the reeds. What I don't know is what are the best tools to use and how should the reed be held in place while working on it. Professionals seem to be able to tune the reed on the inside of the reed block without removing it. If you or one of your contributors could provide information on this area I would find it very useful.

From Alan Rogers

My partner and I play accordion/melodeon. Living in Lincolnshire it's been impossible to find anyone to repair, service or tune our boxes. Since I've had a practical background, it shouldn't be beyond my capabilities to carry out any necessary work but I'm stopped in two main areas of ignorance, perhaps you could help me with a few suggestions.

Firstly, where do you buy components - springs, reeds, button mechanisms etc.?

You can try (www.akkordeonservice.de). Can anyone recommend any other suppliers? Stephen McKelvey

Secondly, how do you know about the technology of reeds, that is, why is it that one works and one doesn't, when visually they're exactly the same?

How do you tune them?

Is there a book on the subject, or even better, are there courses that you know of?

If you could steer me in a useful direction, I'd be so grateful,
